What is disulfiram?

Disulfiram is a drug used to treat alcohol use disorder. Disulfiram works by blocking the breakdown of alcohol in the body.

Why is disulfiram prescribed?

Disulfiram is used to treat chronic alcoholism. It causes unpleasant effects when even small amounts of alcohol are consumed. These effects include facial flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, weakness, blurred vision, mental confusion, sweating, choking, breathing difficulties and anxiety.

These effects begin about 10 minutes after alcohol enters the body and last for an hour or more.

Disulfiram is not a cure for alcoholism, but it discourages drinking.

This medicine is sometimes prescribed for other purposes as well; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How does disulfiram work?

Disulfiram works by blocking the breakdown of alcohol in the body. This leads to the build-up of a toxic alcohol-related compound that can cause people who drink alcohol while taking this medication to become very sick. This response encourages people to avoid alcohol while taking the medication.

What are the side effects of disulfiram?

Drowsiness, tiredness, headache, acne and a metallic/garlic-like taste in the mouth may occur as your body gets used to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Remember that this medication was prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people taking this medicine have no serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: decreased sexual ability, vision changes, numbness/kinking in arms/legs, muscle weakness, mental/mood changes (e.g. agitation, extreme agitation/confusion), seizures , confusion.

This medicine can rarely cause severe (rarely fatal) liver disease. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, tell your doctor immediately: persistent nausea/vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine, yellowing eyes/skin.

A very serious allergic reaction to this medicine is rare. However, get medical help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, difficulty breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other side effects not listed above, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.
