What is donepezil?

Donepezil belongs to a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors. It improves mental function (such as memory, attention, ability to interact with others, speaking, thinking clearly, and performing normal daily activities) by increasing the amount of a certain naturally occurring chemical in the brain.

Donepezil may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities in people with Alzheimer's disease. However, it does not cure the disease or prevent the mental faculties from being lost at some point in the future.

Why is donepezil prescribed?

Donepezil is used to treat dementia (a brain disorder that affects the ability to remember, think clearly, communicate and perform daily activities and can cause changes in mood and personality) in people who have Alzheimer's disease.

How does donepezil work?

Donepezil belongs to a class of drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. A class of drugs is a group of drugs that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

People with Alzheimer's disease have low levels of a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Low levels of this chemical can cause dementia or problems with mental function or performing daily tasks.

Donepezil works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine. This can help reduce the symptoms of dementia.
