What is Indomethacin?

Indomethacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Indomethacin is used to treat moderate to severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis. Indomethacin is also used to treat shoulder pain caused by bursitis or tendonitis.

Indomethacin may also be used for purposes not listed here.

Why is indomethacin prescribed?

Indomethacin is used to relieve pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, gout, bursitis, and tendonitis. It is also used to relieve pain from various other conditions.

How does indomethacin work?

The active substance indomethacin is a painkiller (analgesic) from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

It is mainly used to treat rheumatic diseases, but also pain, swelling and inflammation from other causes.

What are the side effects of indomethacin?

Indomethacin can cause mild or serious side effects. The following list contains some of the major side effects that can occur while taking indomethacin. This list does not include all possible side effects.

For more information about the possible side effects of indomethacin, or tips on how to deal with a troubling side effect, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

The most common side effects that occur with indomethacin include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomit
  • Heartburn
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach ache
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • tinnitus

In what dosages is indomethacin prescribed?

  • The recommended adult dosage of extended-release indomethacin for the treatment of inflammation or rheumatic disease is 50-200 mg per day in 2-3 divided doses.
  • Bursitis or tendonitis are treated with a total dose of 75-150 mg of extended-release indomethacin per day, given in 3 or 4 doses, or 75-150 mg of extended-release indomethacin per day, given in 2 divided doses.
  • Acute gouty arthritis is treated with 50 mg every 8 hours for 3 to 5 days.

What drugs or supplements does indomethacin interact with?

Cholestyramine (Questran) and colestipol (Colestid) may decrease the absorption of indomethacin by binding to indomethacin in the gut and preventing absorption into the body. Indomethacin and other pain relievers can decrease the elimination of lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid) by the kidneys and thereby increase lithium levels in the blood. This can lead to lithium toxicity.

Indomethacin may interfere with drugs given to lower blood pressure. This can happen because prostaglandins play a role in the regulation of blood pressure.

When indomethacin is used in combination with methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall) or aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), the blood level of the methotrexate or aminoglycoside may increase. This is because its elimination from the body is reduced. This may lead to more methotrexate or aminoglycoside related side effects.

Indomethacin should be avoided in patients with a history of asthma attacks, hives, or other allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs.

If aspirin is taken along with indomethacin, there may be an increased risk of developing an ulcer.

Individuals who consume more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day may have an increased risk of developing stomach ulcers when taking indomethacin or other NSAIDs.

Indomethacin potentiates the negative effect of cyclosporine on renal function and decreases the effect of furosemide (Lasix) and thiazide diuretics due to the inhibition of prostaglandins.

Individuals taking oral blood thinners or anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin), should avoid indomethacin because indomethacin also thins the blood, and excessive blood thinning can lead to bleeding.
