Abilify is an antipsychotic drug. It works by changing the way chemicals work in the brain.
Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia, in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.
Abilify is also used alone or with a mood stabilizer to treat bipolar I disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
Abilify is used with antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder in adults.
Abilify is also used in children who are at least 6 years old to treat Tourette's disorder and to treat symptoms associated with autistic disorder (irritability, aggression, mood swings, tantrums, and self-injury).
Abilify is used to treat certain mental disorders (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, and irritability associated with autism). It can also be used in combination with other medications to treat depression.
Abilify is a “dopamine stabilizer”, meaning it can act as a dopamine receptor antagonist when the dopamine system is overactive, and as a partial agonist when dopamine levels are low. It is able to do this because it has a very high affinity for dopamine receptors, so it binds to the receptor instead of dopamine.
Common Abilify side effects can include:
This is not a complete list of side effects and other side effects may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice on any side effects.
The recommended starting and target dose for Abilify is 10 or 15 mg/day administered once daily without regard to meals.
Abilify has been systematically evaluated and shown to be effective in a dose range of 10 to 30 mg/day. However, doses higher than 10 or 15 mg/day were no more effective than 10 or 15 mg/day.
Dose escalation should generally not occur before 2 weeks.
Taking Abilify with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can cause dangerous side effects or death.
Sometimes it is not safe to take certain medicines at the same time. Some medicines can affect the blood levels of other medicines you are taking, increasing their side effects or making the medicines less effective.
Many drugs can interact with Abilify. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed here. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
