What Causes Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids can be very painful and are therefore considered a very annoying condition. Hemorrhoids are actually the cavernous bodies that are located in the end of the rectum. Everyone has these cavernous bodies and, together with the sphincter of your anus, they ensure that no moisture or air can get in or out when this is not desired. The erectile tissues can best be seen as small sponges that can swell when necessary. When having hemorrhoids, these cavernous bodies swell way too much. Due to the extreme swelling, the cavernous bodies can become detached from the place where they should normally be. In the worst case, the extremely swollen cavernous bodies can hang outside the anus. If this happens, we speak of external hemorrhoids. This external shape can be very painful. To relieve the pain, it can help to gently push the cavernous bodies back in.
There is no unambiguous explanation for the development of hemorrhoids. There are a number of factors that can contribute to causing this. The factors that can contribute to this are:
- A lot of sitting and little exercise
- Holding the stool for too long
- Forcing and applying too much pressure during a bowel movement
- Being overweight
- Be pregnant
- Forced pressure during a bowel movement causes the cavernous bodies to swell and damage, so that they can separate from the intestinal wall. At a certain point they can come out with the feces and remain there. People who often have to exert pressure during a bowel movement may suffer from extra hard and dry stools. This can usually be solved by eating fiber-rich foods and drinking plenty of water.
Complaints about hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids can cause all kinds of annoying complaints, usually these are very painful and irritating. The complaints that can occur include that there may be blood in the stool. It should be immediately mentioned that if the blood has a dark color or is in and not around the stool and persists for more than 1 time, the doctor should be consulted. In addition to being very painful, hemorrhoids can also cause irritation of the skin around the anus and annoying itching.
Hemorrhoids usually disappear on their own within a few weeks, but that is not always the case. In some cases, surgery may be required. This usually happens when the erectile tissues do not automatically return to their old shape and the condition becomes too painful to be able to sit, for example. There are a number of things you can do yourself to relieve the pain, itching and irritation and speed up the healing process. It is best to clean the anus after a bowel movement with moist toilet paper or a washcloth with lukewarm water. Then you can pat the anus dry with normal toilet paper. What also seems to be very helpful is taking a warm bath every night. This helps to relieve the pain. It is also wise not to scratch yourself if you have itching in the place where the hemorrhoids are located. If you suffer from external cavernous bodies, try to push them back in every time.
Using Hemorrhoid Ointment
You can also use special creams and ointments that help relieve that pain and itching. If you want to reduce the pain and itching with an ointment, it is best to take an ointment that contains lidocaine as an ingredient. If all this has little or no effect, you can also ask your pharmacy or doctor for special suppositories against hemorrhoids. If you also suffer from hard and dry stools, it is best to ensure that you get extra fiber. You can do this by eating fiber-rich foods such as whole-wheat bread and whole-wheat pasta. If this does not yet have the desired effect and your stool is still dry and hard, you can get a remedy at the pharmacy for hard stools and constipation.
There are also a number of other conditions that are very similar to the symptoms of hemorrhoids. For example, you may also suffer from fissures around the anus. Fissures can also be very painful and cause bleeding around the anus. Another condition can be having bruising around the anus. This is usually caused by forcibly applying too much pressure during a bowel movement. You may also suffer from protruding skin flaps around the anus. This is also called marisken. If these are swollen, they often give the same symptoms as hemorrhoids.
It often happens that people think they have hemorrhoids when they actually suffer from one of the above conditions. This in itself is not a bad thing, but if you are not one hundred percent sure that you have hemorrhoids, we always recommend that you go to the doctor. Your GP can make the correct diagnosis for you.
