These findings were recently published in the Netherlands Journal of Psychiatry by Professor Genevieve Beleville, of the Amsterdam School of Psychology.
The study looked at more than 14.000 Dutch statistics. This survey is conducted every 2 years and the study looked at the data recorded between 2019 and 2021. In coming to a conclusion in this study, Professor Belleville also considered many other factors in taken into consideration. These include the possibility of alcohol and tobacco consumption, physical health and activity, and depression can also contribute to the death rate. Therefore, she adjusted her findings accordingly to these factors.
At this stage, a number of reasons for the rise in the death rate have been put forward.
These reasons include:
- Sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs affect coordination, alertness and responsiveness. This increases the risk of an accident or fall that could seriously injure the patient.
- These drugs also inhibit the central nervous system and taking them increases the risk of taking one's own life.
- It has also been found that these drugs can affect the respiratory system. This can make breathing difficult during sleep, which in turn can lead to an increased risk of conditions such as sleep apnea.
Shockingly, about half of all Dutch people suffer from insomnia or a sleep disorder and an estimated 15% of these people regularly take sleeping pills to treat it.
This study should wake up anyone who currently relies on sleeping pills to get to sleep. There are a lot of natural remedies available that should be considered and tried before resorting to medicine. Before writing a prescription or buy sleeping pills, we have to ask, "Is it all worth it?"
